"masak" means cooking, so it came naturally when my friends created a comfy nickname - "Made who cooks" or "cooking with Made". I am a nomadic chef, a foraging advocate, but above all - I am passionate about reconnecting humans with their roots - with the soil and it's generous gifts.
About Mawija
Mawija is an initiative grounded in the rich cultural wisdom of Bali and the spiritual essence of Bija—the seed of potential, growth, and transformation. Our mission is to reconnect the people of Bali with their ancestral farming knowledge, empowering communities to embrace sustainable practices, foster food sovereignty, and preserve the island’s rich cultural and ecological heritage for future generations.
At Mawija, we believe that sustainability is not just an environmental concern, but also a deeply cultural one. Our goal is to create a resilient and thriving future for Bali through permaculture, community-based agriculture, and sustainable food systems. We aim to inspire both locals and travellers to engage with the land in a respectful and sustainable way, promoting a circular economy that honours the island’s heritage while fostering innovation and growth.
Mission
To empower Balinese communities by fostering a sustainable and holistic relationship with the land through education, collaboration, and the revival of traditional farming practices, in harmony with permaculture principles. We strive to contribute in building a model of sustainable agriculture that preserves the island’s natural resources, supports local farmers, and contributes to the well-being of future generations.
Vision
A Bali where sustainable farming practices, rooted in ancestral wisdom and guided by permaculture, thrive alongside vibrant communities. Our vision is to cultivate a future where food forests, community kitchens, and regenerative agriculture are not just ways of life, but the foundation of a greener, healthier, and more connected island for locals and visitors alike.
Our Goal
To transform Bali into a beacon of sustainable farming and eco-tourism, where permaculture practices are embraced, local communities are empowered, and Bali’s rich heritage is preserved. We aim to create a thriving, collaborative ecosystem that aligns with the island’s unique culture and natural beauty, benefiting both the local people and global travellers.
Bali faces growing pressures from overdevelopment, unsustainable agricultural practices, and the loss of traditional knowledge. At Mawija, we recognize that the future of Bali lies in the hands of its people, its land, and its ability to harmonize with nature.
Mawija is more than just a project—it’s a movement. Whether you’re a local resident, a visitor, or someone passionate about sustainability, we invite you to join us in making Bali a more sustainable, vibrant, and connected place. Together, we can grow a future that’s rooted in respect, tradition, and innovation.
Best start of the year
Take your part in building our first Dapur Komunitas - a safe space for Balinese women to come together, learn from each other through sharing, and receive knowledge from our beloved island's awesome permaculture activists.
